In brief

We offer a cutting edge ethical volunteer programme that gives highly motivated individuals the chance to work alongside our marine biologists and support the local community. We are heavily engaged with our community and village Elders, and committed to improving learning facilities, providing marine conservation and water safety education at two local schools. LTO actively supports learning through cultural and international awareness, and an appreciation of inter-dependence with a spirit of respect for the values of diversity and social responsibility. (Optional Safari)

As a Love The Oceans volunteer you form an essential part of our research and community outreach teams. All of our programs start with an orientation and a safety lecture. We want to ensure that everyone has the same level of knowledge about LTO, the conservation work we do, and your role and responsibilities as a volunteer. After the training week, you will rotate around our principal activities:

  • Coral reef research
  • Fisheries research
  • Megafauna surveys
  • Teaching and Painting at the local schools
  • Beach Cleans

Our research working week is full-time Monday to Friday, and you will collect a variety of different but equally important data sets.

The data is then processed by Love The Oceans’ team themselves, used by students in their dissertations, and shared with other research institutes with similar goals.

Every second Saturday afternoon you will support LTOs free water safety and swimming lessons for the local school.

Volunteers have Saturday mornings and Sundays to participate in a variety of optional extra activities such as surf lessons, learning to free dive, joining a sailing trip, advancing your diving qualifications (Advanced/Rescue) or just relaxing on the beach.

The price includes everything you will need from when you step off the plane, you just need to bring any cash you want for souvenirs, extra snacks etc.

Whenever you volunteer abroad, you should always check out the organisation you’re going with and their ethical policies. Here at Love The Oceans we’re committed to ensuring your volunteer time is used both ethically and efficiently.

All of LTO operations are driven by our six key principles of ethical volunteering; Continuity, Consistency, Commitment, Responsible Research, Cultural Awareness, and Sustainable Interactions limiting and eliminating dependency. We are PASSIONATE about this topic, if your would like more details on our six key ethical volunteering principles and our commitment to ethical volunteering visit our website.
