Art, Music & Linguisitcs Abroad

The Language Gap has organised many experiences where music and language learning have been a magical combination. There is nothing like making music, dancing (or any art form, for that matter) to ease conversation and encourage communication. From playing percussion and marimba in Guatemala and Nicaragua, trombone in Ecuador, playing in a jazz band in Seville, flamenco dancing in Granada, performing on Handel’s organ in Germany; teaching flute, trumpet, piano and more in community projects in Argentina, there are no limits to the fabulous partnerships that can be made because of the love of music. Arranging a term in Florence Italy with opera singing and fine art classes for Kaya (19) was a joy; she had a wonderful time in the City of Art and Flowers as part of her gap year before going to study architecture at university.

Stay with a Host Family

Are you thinking of staying with a host family during your Language Gap? Feeling a little hesitant? Language Gappers who chose homestay accommodation have provided a multitude of positive reviews
Faith (17) spent 2 weeks in Angers, France and had this to say: “I couldn’t have wished for a better host family, they were so lovely, so welcoming, so kind, put me at ease. They always made sure I was included in conversations, checking that I was understanding, explaining things in a different way if I didn’t. We did many activities, both cultural and seeing family and friends, which was lovely.”
Theo (16) spent 3 weeks in San Sebastián, Spain; this is how he described his experience: “I loved staying with my host family. They were so lovely, kind, and welcoming at all times. The apartment was in a very nice part of town and it was perfect for my immersion because it forced me to learn very quickly: they spoke very, very fast. The packed lunches were delicious and there was always enough to eat.”

Gastronomy & Language Courses

Theo (17) spent 3 weeks in San Sebastián in northern Spain during his summer holidays; the course is a combination of Spanish language and culture with additional surf or Basque cookery classes, perfect for a foodie! He loved the summer programme for teens (14-17) run by our fantastic local partner school and he sent over a comprehensive article all about his stay:
“I loved staying with my host family. They were so lovely, kind, and welcoming at all times. The apartment was in a very nice part of town and I had my own room with a very comfortable bed. I made an effort to eat whenever and whatever the family ate which was always delicious and fascinating. It was perfect for my immersion because it forced me to learn very quickly as they spoke very, very fast.
